Joint General Secretary of the ruling
party’s Agordarhi Union unit in the Upazila, Nazrul Islam was not in the house
during the attack which also left another injured.
Quoting locals,
Satkhira Sadar Police Station OC Enamul Haque also said the Jamaat activists
might have carried out the attack at Nazrul’s house at the union’s Kuchpukur
village around 9pm.
Nazrul Islam also blamed Jamaat supporters for the
attack.
The deceased Sirajul Islam Sardar, 53, was Nazrul’s elder
brother. The injured Kawsar Ali is his brother-in-law.
At least 13
leaders and activists of the ruling party have been killed since February after
Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee was handed down death sentence for 1971 war
crimes.
Some of them were killed during the recent blockades enforced by
the BNP-led 18-Party alliance.
However, OC Enamul Haque told bdnews24.com
that Jamaat-backed criminal Habibur Rahman alias ‘Hobi Dakat’ was involved in
the attack on Nazrul’s house.
He said at least 30 miscreants came riding
motorcycles and attacked the house. They entered Sirajul’s house after failing
to find Nazrul.
They fled after firing several rounds leaving Sirajul
dead on the spot. Kawsar was shot in the hand.
Nazrul Islam later told
reporters at the district town that he had been attacked several times in the
past after Sayedee was given the death penalty.
Earlier, activists of
Jamaat and Islami Chhatra Shibir, its student wing, had attacked, vandalised and
set fire to his house, he said.
“They also had tried to shoot me, but I
barely made it out safe.”
Since then, he has been living in the town
under police protection.
OC Haque said they were conducting raids to nab
the assailants.
Sirajul’s body was sent to Satkhira Sadar Hospital for
autopsy.
The deceased’s family was preparing to lodge a case over the
murder, Haque added.
